ABOUT CLAUSSEN’S
Built in 1928 by George Frederick Claussen in Columbia, Claussen’s Bakery played a key role in the city's industrial and commercial development. The building's design is noteworthy as an early example in Columbia of expressing a corporate image through architecture.
Established by the grandson of a German immigrant, the bakery expanded across South Carolina and Georgia by 1940, employing hundreds. Although the Columbia bakery ceased operations in 1963, its two-story brick structure, totaling 25,000 square feet, remains as the only intact manifestation of the enterprise in the state.
As of 1987, the building is now prominently listed in the National Register, and today it serves as home to many residents in the Columbia community while keeping the integrity and history of the building at the forefront.
